It wasn’t long after Gem’s birth that her mum Dee noticed something about her eyes that gave her concern. Over the coming days and weeks, Dee—and the medical staff supporting her—began to realise that Gem couldn’t see the world around her.
Gem was eventually diagnosed with a rare condition called Peters Syndrome, which involves a thinning and clouding of the cornea leading to significant vision loss. But Gem’s parents Dee and Michael never once doubted that their little girl would be able to lead a full and happy life.
And they were so excited to introduce Gem to her loving big sister Pip, who was born five years earlier with severe hearing loss.
