Inspired by Amity!

Amity was born in January 2021 and failed her hearing test in the hospital, referred to Westmead Children's hospital for comprehensive audiology Amity and her family were told she was at least severely Deaf.

From there Amity was connected to the Deafness centre at Westmead Children's hospital to see a paediatrician who ordered lots of tests such as MRI, xray, ultrasound, blood tests and eye tests. Amity had her MRI and at 6 weeks old and her parents were told she has cochlea applasia which means she does not have the cochlears on either sides, no auditory nerves and is missing most of the vestibular system (balance).

Amity was around 9 weeks old when she started to  attended weekly Auslan sessions with a Deaf Mentor and teacher of the Deaf, physiotherapy to assist with her balance and gross motor skills, Auslan Signing group as well as Auslan in the home with a Deaf Mentor who teaches Amity and her family.

Amity has continued to show everyone how amazing she is.  she has a vocabulary of around 200 signs and growing!  Her parents are absolutely devoted to Amity’s happiness and provide her with so much opportunity to develop.

Having Amity in our care at Explore & Develop Baulkham Hills has allowed us to all be inspired and learn about the deaf community. She has shown us no to never give up and keep tying! Amity loves life. People. Play and radiates joy!

Our educators have been dedicated to learning Auslan and ensuring Amity feels included and safe. We have been blown away by the team of people that support Amity and her resilience as she grows up.

We see other children signing and accepting the differences amongst eachother. We hope to raise not only funds but awareness for incredible children like Amity!

Inclusion matters!
