Natalija aims high

In Melbourne, there’s a basketball court where something extraordinary is happening. Or rather, someone extraordinary is playing—her name is Natalija.

Natalija’s sporting ability has grown in leaps and bounds, all thanks to support from generous donors like you. Recently her coach started wearing a mobile microphone called a Roger, which was recommended by Natalija’s speech therapist at NextSense, and is designed to reduce background noise.

The device connects wirelessly to Natalija’s cochlear implants, so she can hear her coach’s instructions when she’s on the basketball court. Natalija uses the Roger microphone at school too. It complements the existing Soundfield system, which amplifies her teacher’s voice.

Having a second listening device—and the choice to switch between them—allows Natalija to make decisions for herself.  With the ongoing support of generous donors like you, Natalija’s thriving. She's growing in confidence on and off the basketball court.

Ellis the bookworm

The services you help provide to children are life-changing. There’s no better example of that than Ellis.

Ellis was born deaf—but thanks to donations from people like you, Ellis is receiving ongoing support and reaching his full potential.

Susanna, Ellis’ mum, contacted us recently to say Ellis has started kindy—a huge milestone! Better still, he’s begun reading and writing, and has developed a real love of books.

In fact, Susanna was delighted to say that Ellis loves reading and writing so much he practices every day. Even on a recent family holiday!

‘He’s a diligent young student!’ revealed Susanna, who’s over the moon to see her son so happy and content.

Thanks to tailored services such as physiotherapy, speech therapy and music therapy, Ellis is growing into a confident and capable young boy.

To 'big school' and beyond

Diagnosed with blindness at just four-months-old, Sora is a happy little girl who’s embracing every challenge to get herself ready for ‘big school.’

We shared Sora's story with you recently and the great news is that since then, with keyworker Lynita’s help, Sora's gone from strength to strength, getting ready for a successful transition to school.

Lynita has been paying special attention to Sora’s literacy skills, including reading and introducing her to the Perkins brailler to prepare her for the future. Sora has also started to use two hands to follow lines of braille and tactilea vital skill in order to read braille books and worksheets at school.

With each new skill Sora acquires, her confidence grows. Because of the individualised support you help provide, Sora’s continuing to develop her skills. Look out ‘big school,’ here comes Sora!
